Erie's LeapFrog! sculptures, a delightful public art project, have left an indelible mark on the city's landscape since their debut in 2004. But what makes this initiative truly fascinating is the story behind its creation and the impact it has had on the community. Personally, I think the LeapFrog! project is a testament to the power of public art in bringing people together and fostering a sense of community pride. It's more than just a collection of sculptures; it's a symbol of Erie's creativity and spirit. What many people don't realize is that the LeapFrog! project was a sequel to the successful GoFish! initiative, which itself was a creative response to the city's need for a unique public art project. In my opinion, this sequel not only built upon the success of its predecessor but also introduced a new theme that captured the essence of the year 2004, a leap year, adding a layer of symbolism to the project. The LeapFrog! sculptures, designed by artist David Seitzinger, were a sight to behold. Sponsors had the option to choose between a towering 7-foot 11-inch standing frog or a 5-foot 11-inch crouched frog. Local artists then brought these sculptures to life with their vibrant paintings. One thing that immediately stands out is the variety of themes and styles in the sculptures, from 'Carmen Frogmanda' by Richard Davis to 'Copper Hopper Chopper' by Seitzinger himself. This diversity not only showcases the talent of local artists but also adds to the project's overall appeal. The fact that some of these sculptures are still on display in the city and beyond is a testament to their enduring popularity. For instance, the LeapFrogs! at Shriners Children's Erie Outpatient Clinic and the Sportsmen's Athletic Club on West Eighth Street in Millcreek continue to bring joy to both locals and visitors alike. What this really suggests is that public art projects like LeapFrog! have a lasting impact on the community, becoming integral parts of the city's identity. However, the project also raises a deeper question about the role of public art in raising funds for local initiatives. Eleven of the sculptures were auctioned in fall 2004, along with 20 miniature frogs painted by local artists, raising almost $20,000 for art initiatives and scholarships. This aspect of the project is particularly interesting, as it demonstrates how public art can be a powerful tool for community development and fundraising. From my perspective, the LeapFrog! project is not just about the sculptures themselves but also about the community that came together to create them. It's about the sponsors who chose the frogs, the artists who painted them, and the people who continue to enjoy them. It's a story of creativity, collaboration, and community spirit, and it's one that deserves to be told and celebrated.
