La Grande Mare is set to become a significant employer in Guernsey, with the creation of over 100 jobs. This ambitious project, led by Steve Lansdown, aims to transform the former four-star hotel into a world-class sporting experience. Lansdown's vision is to offer more than just a round of golf; it's about creating a hospitality experience that attracts both local and international visitors. The course, designed by Robin Hiseman, is already receiving high praise, with Lansdown comparing it favorably to some of the best courses he's played globally. The investment in the infrastructure and the hiring of over 20 full-time staff indicate a serious commitment to quality. However, the real challenge lies in maintaining the course's condition and providing an exceptional experience for all visitors. The new managing director, Ben Stimson, brings a wealth of experience from premium golf environments in the UK and Middle East, and he's confident in the team's ability to deliver. The focus, at least initially, is on the local market, with no membership required and green fees set at £200 per person. This price point is higher than comparable courses in the region, but Lansdown believes it will be justified by the elevated experience on offer. The project's success will depend on the ability to attract a diverse range of visitors and maintain the high standards set by the course and its facilities. The addition of the Vraic restaurant and Bella Luce, as well as the Golf Performance Centre, further enhances the overall experience. As the course prepares for its August opening, the anticipation is palpable, and the potential impact on the local economy and tourism is significant. However, the real test will be in delivering on the promises made and maintaining the high expectations set by this ambitious project.
