I recently had the opportunity to drive the Jaecoo 7, the UK's best-selling car, and I must admit, I'm left with a sense of regret. The decision to opt for the four-wheel-drive 1.6T petrol variant over the 1.5 SHS plug-in hybrid model has left me wondering if I made a mistake. While I've had a great time with my top-spec Luxury variant, covering 6000 miles and getting to know this budget-friendly family SUV inside out, I can't help but think that the plug-in hybrid option might have been the better choice.
The price difference between the two variants was initially £2315, but it has since narrowed, with the plug-in hybrid now just £1180 more expensive. This is a significant difference, especially when considering leasing options, which can often be comparable to the entry-level 2WD Deluxe model. It's a shame, as the petrol variant is not significantly better than the plug-in hybrid.
The plug-in hybrid's performance is impressive, with a combined 201bhp and 229lb ft of torque, compared to the petrol variant's 203lb ft. The plug-in hybrid feels more dynamic, with instant and effortless performance, and a claimed electric range of 56 miles. This means I could easily get to work and back on a single charge, without burning any fuel.
The petrol variant, on the other hand, has a paltry 30.4mpg average, and the engine can be intrusive and frustrating to drive. The plug-in hybrid, however, offers a more relaxing and refined driving experience, with a more efficient and environmentally friendly performance.
In my opinion, the plug-in hybrid is the clear winner. It offers a more dynamic and efficient performance, with a longer electric range and a more environmentally friendly approach. While the petrol variant might be more suitable for those who drive long distances or need a more powerful engine, the plug-in hybrid is a better choice for those who want a more efficient and environmentally friendly car.
The Jaecoo 7 plug-in hybrid is a great option for those looking for a budget-friendly family SUV with a more efficient and environmentally friendly performance. It's a shame that more people don't consider the plug-in hybrid option, as it offers a more dynamic and efficient driving experience, with a longer electric range and a more environmentally friendly approach.
